Opting out of Government Retirement Systems

Opting out of Government Retirement SystemsOpting out of Government Retirement SystemsGovernment employees cannot opt out of retirement systems. Mandatory participation is a foundational principle of government retirement setups. And most government employees are just fine with that. Government Employees Are Automatically Enrolled When a person takes a job with government agencies, that person is automatically enrolled in the employers retirement system. For instance, workers at federal agencies contribute to the Federal Employees Retirement System or FERS. State and local jurisdictions have similar systems. While these systems vary across the country, they are largely similar in how employees contribute, how annuities are funded, how annuity payments are calculated and how retirement eligibility is determined. While it may appear overbearing for an employer to mandate participation in a retirement plan that takes money directly out of the employees paycheck, doing so is necessar y for a strong retirement system that will stay functional in perpetuity. The money employees contribute is used for two main purposes to invest for future payments to retirees and to actually pay retirees now. Unless everyone participates, these two uses for the money might not be carried out for lack of sufficient funding. Some look at this arrangement and liken it to the saying about robbing Peter to pay Paul. To some extent, their right. Employees of today are at least partially funding annuity payments to current retirees, but when you spin the clock forward, todays employees become tomorrows retirees, and a new generation of employees partially funds retirees annuities. As long as tzu siche are employees, wise investments, and reserve funds, these government retirement systems hold up over time. The One Case In Which Workers Do Not Contribute The only time existing workers do not contribute is when they are return-to-work retirees who draw annuities from the retirement sys tem. It doesnt make much sense for a retiree to contribute to a retirement system when that person is already receiving annuity payments. Some retirement systems charge employing agencies a fee because the return-to-work retirees organizational location is not contributing and therefore lowers the number of contributors. The fee helps offset the negative impact to the retirement system. Those who have retired from another retirement system but are working for an organization affiliated with a different one must contribute to the employers system. Even though a return-to-work retiree will likely withdraw contributions before reaching the required years of service to qualify for an annuity, all workers must contribute because the retirement system has no way of knowing which ones will or wont eventually draw an annuity. Most of the time, government workers do not mind mandatory participation in retirement systems. These systems make retirement planning easier when compared to what pri vate sector workers must do. For most retired public servants, retirement system annuities make up a large portion of their monthly income. Combine that with Social Security, then personal savings do not need to make up much of a retirees strategy for supporting his or her lifestyle. Government workers still have to save on their own, but they are not as susceptible to investment risks negatively impacting their nest eggs. For most, the three-legged stool of government retirement is fairly easy to keep balanced.

How to Ask for Money for Professional Development - The Muse

How to Ask for Money for Professional Development - The Muse How to Ask for Money for Professional Development You somehow missed the class on navigating Excel spreadsheets. You don’t know how to read HTML. You don’t have the first clue how to fix or even size a photo in Photoshop. While not integral to your daily role, these things keep popping up, and you groan inwardly every time they do. You see, you really should know the basics of creating a PowerPoint presentation by this point. You ought to have a handle on spreadsheet formulas by now. You can’t keep relying on your co-worker to do it for you- how many favors do you owe him at this point? If you feel you’re missing a key skill that’s bound to help you on your chosen career path, or at least not hold you back from getting ahead and kicking butt at work, you need to fill in the gap. If you’re certain that a conference or class will motivate you like nothing else, but, well, you don’t exactly have any extra money in the bank to pay for it, why not ask your boss if there’s money for professional development. (Provided of course, you’ve ruled out the option of finding one for free). The only caveat: Be careful not to pursue a skill that you should already know how to do. Growing into and beyond your role is one thing. Demonstrating that you don’t know what you were essentially hired to do is another kind of conversation altogether. Assuming that’s not the case, here are two different email templates, depending on what kind of company you work at: If Your Company Has a Professional Development Budget Hi  [Name of Boss], That was a great and insightful team meeting we had last week. In fact, your follow-up email about the future of our product as far as our team is concerned got me thinking that I’d really like to have a better, stronger sense of industry trends. I came across this speaking event [link to the event], and there are still some tickets left! Based on the description, I think it would be an excellent out-of-office learning opportunity, and I’m confident I’d come back with [item you’re hoping to learn/gain from attending event]. Please let me know if there’s budget available for me to attend. If we can’t cover the entire thing, but I can be reimbursed for part of it, that might work. Keep me posted! Thanks so much. Best, [Your Name] If You’re Not Sure if There’s a Budget Hi  [Name of Boss], I’m so pleased that the team has taken an interest in enhancing the design and feel of our marketing materials with limited professional design help. I’ve never been much of an artist, but I have to admit I’m enjoying the free software tools we’ve been introduced to this quarter. I do, however, think that I could really up my creative skill set and work faster if I took a related course. I looked up a few options and here’s what I found: [include links to courses you’d be interested in pursuing]. We’ve never discussed whether or not there’s team budget for this, so I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but the price point is a bit out of my personal reach. If there’s a way for me to enroll in the course and be reimbursed for the professional development, I would love that. I’d be eager to share my learnings with the group as well! I completely understand if we don’t have the resources for this at this time; will you please let me know if anything changes? Thanks! [Your Name] The idea with these inquiries is that it doesn’t hurt to ask. At the very least, you demonstrate to your manager that you care about your job and you’re interested in what ways you can further excel in it. After all, you’re not demanding reimbursement. You’re not refusing to do your job unless. You’re simply drafting an email and starting a dialogue. The worst that can happen is that your boss turns you down because the budget simply isn’t available. But the best? You get a yes and start getting even further ahead.

Worst Possible Things to Say in a Cover Letter

Worst Possible Things to Say in a Cover Letter Worst Possible Things to Say in a Cover Letter One must never forget the important end-user while applying to jobs online is “the human being who will hire you”. If you start forgetting your job search will be longer and more frustrating. Most importantly, you should never forget about the people reading your cover letters and start venting your frustrations in applications. We share real-life experiences of the worst possible things people said in cover letters. Worst thing #1: Keeping it real This person obviously thought the actions of being direct, honest, and upfront would work in his favor. Imagine trying to hire an employee, and you come across this. Would you appreciate the attempt to keep it real? Cover letter text “I really need a job.” Of course, this person needs a job just like the other 100 candidates who applied. This person fails to mention what was requested in the job listing or why they are a great fit. Worst thing #2: Digital screaming The idea of typing in all capital letters has looked like yelling ever since the telegraph became obsolete as a communication tool. The only time you will see all capital letters today is when someone is angrily sending a message or a shocking news headline. So, you can imagine why all caps does not belong in a cover letter to express your desire to work for a company. Cover letter text “I POSESS ALL THE SKILLS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION EXCEPT I DO NOT HAVE FAST TYPING SKILLS!” Such a cover letter leaves a company wondering if this person possesses the communication skills to work in an online environment. Worst thing #3: Cover letters written by trolls Not much needs to be said about this cover letter below. It is either a troll seeking to cause a reaction or a person who really needs a job and used the opportunity to express disgust in the salary. Neither of which is a productive way to search for jobs online while making the entire process more difficult for everyone seriously seeking work. Cover letter text “Wow! You pay nothing.” The job description for this post makes mention of people working in a startup environment. This person may be looking for a well-paying job that offers benefits. Regardless, he or she will not find that job with a pure focus on salary. And as mom used to say, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all.” At the end of the day The grand mistake each of these job seekers made was losing sight of the human factor involved in looking for work online. Even if the process seems cold and unfeeling there is still a person on the other side of the screen trying to find the best job candidate. Online job applications should be treated like two people trying to connect with one another.

5 Habits All Successful Employees Have

5 Habits All Successful Employees Have 5 Habits All Successful Employees Have 1. Be on Time Punctuality might seem like an obvious prerequisite for success, but there are some people who really struggle with it. There are folks who live with “chronic lateness”-  a somewhat tongue-in-cheek disorder that can nevertheless have a real impact on peoples work lives. There are workers  who can’t seem to keep a job because they can never manage to make it to work on time. Being on time is important because it shows your employer that you are dedicated to your work. Furthermore, it shows that you are a team player who is respectful of other people’s time. Punctuality isn’t only about arriving to work on time it also means meeting deadlines, attending meetings, and making it to any other functions that your employer may host.  Being successful as an employee starts  with the simple habit of always  being on time. 2. Respect Your Employer Being respectful to your employer is simple. Listen carefully to instructions, be courteous, and never talk back or interrupt. That being said, sometimes, being respectful to your  employer can be difficult, especially if you have  a boss who is hard to deal with. Nevertheless,  at the end of the day, your employer is the one who signs your paychecks. Think of it this way: a job is a job, and an employer is part of that job. If you can listen to  instructions, be courteous, not talk back,  and not interrupt  your boss when they are speaking, you can easily be successful as an employee. You dont have  to like your boss, but you should show them  respect, because doing so  helps to keep the overall morale up in the office. 3. Show Passion People who get to work in their dream jobs are extremely lucky, but not everyone is fortunate enough to work in their ideal role. The good news is that everybody has a passion in life. Whether you enjoy  hosting work-related events and parties  or like working in a specific department  e.g., accounting versus human resources you can find areas in your day-to-day job where you can let your passion really thrive. Showing passion at work will help you be a successful employee because your employer and supervisors will take notice. Your passion can  reinforce morale and show others that you care about the success of the company and your career. 4. Show Initiative There is nothing a boss loves more than an employee who shows initiative. No matter what, there is always something to do at the office even when you have downtime.  Be sure to show initiative. Be  aware  of your surroundings, the bigger picture of your job function, and the needs of  your company/employer, and you’ll be able to find ways to fill in the holes nobody else can fill. Showing initiative can be as simple as taking care of backlogged duties that went forgotten. It can also be something like volunteering to handle something that would generally go uncompleted  by others at the company. When you show initiative, it shows your employer that you care about the company’s overall success. 5. Don’t Gossip There is nothing worse than being a gossip. Job sites will always have at least one or two gossips. People who gossip do so  because they are bored with their jobs and/or insecure about something that may or may not be related to their careers. Avoid gossip at all costs. It brings down morale, distracts your from your work, and becomes an encumbrance to the company because it slows down functions. When people are wasting time with gossip, they are hurting others whether or not they intend to do so. Don’t gossip, and don’t be a gossip. You  will find great success as an employee  because people will like you and find you trustworthy. No one trusts a gossip!

How to Handle Career Mistakes

How to Handle Career Mistakes How to Handle Career Mistakes The following was excerpted from  The Bigs:  The Secrets Nobody Tells Students and Young Professionals About How to Choose a Career, Find a Great Job, Do a Great Job, Be a Leader, Start a Business, Manage Your Money, Stay Out of Trouble, and Live A Happy Life  with the author’s permission. No matter how much you know or how hard you try, you are going to make mistakes as you pursue your career. The question is: how will you handle them? Whatever you do, I caution you not  to follow in the footsteps of a former coworker I refer to as Never. Meet Never Never joined Greenwich Capital a few years before I took over as co-CEO. From the first day she walked in the door, Never projected an aura of confidence and competence. Being young, Never had a junior position at the company. However, because she handled every task efficiently and professionally, more responsibility naturally flowed her way. Never quickly made many friends and was liked and respected throughout the firm. Your first few years at a company are about establishing a foundation on which to build a successful career. The foundation Never constructed in her first few years at Greenwich Capital was rock-solid. But then cracks began to appear. The first one was so small it was not really regarded as a problem but more as a surprising personality quirk. Almost simultaneously, a handful of employees who worked closely with Never realized she never  took responsibility for any mistakes and never apologized for anything. It had taken a few years to notice because Never was so good at her job that she did not make many mistakes. Because Never was well-liked, competent and hardworking, people did not dwell on this issue and instead viewed it as a peccadillo that was assigned to the nobodys perfect bin. The problem was that over the next few years new and much more serious cracks in the foundation appeared as Never began to periodically abuse her position of power. While she still didnt find fault with herself, she was quick to find it in others. In subtle and not-so-subtle ways she let them know. Poor Guy! While there were numerous examples of Nevers abuse of power, the worst was her treatment of one poor guy in the mailroom. The Poor Guy was a gentle soul who loved working at Greenwich Capital. A senior manager of the firm complained he was not receiving his daily newspaper delivery to his office. Never immediately confronted The Poor Guy, accused him of stealing the newspapers and told him she was going to see he got fired. To say that this man was distraught would be a gross understatement. The world he loved was crashing down around him. Never got the head of facilities involved because the mailroom reported to him. Before he agreed to fire anybody, he looked at security tapes to see what really happened. Lo and behold, the tapes revealed that the master criminal was a very senior and very powerful trader at the firm. The trader was asked politely to stop taking the newspapers. When Never was informed of the truth, she laughed it off and, of course, never apologized to The Poor Guy. Not surprisingly, the goodwill and support Never had rightfully earned over the years started to disappear. When Never left Greenwich eight years after her arrival, most of her coworkers were more relieved than sorry to see her go. Three Lessons from Nevers Experience 1. Take responsibility for all mistakes you make. If you are a competent and valued employee, when you do take responsibility it will be viewed as a sign of strength, not weakness, by your coworkers. Plus, youll be in a position to learn and improve. 2. Understand that how your boss views you will be largely a function of how your peers and subordinates see you. All my interactions with Never, from her first day at Greenwich Capital to her last, were nothing but positive. However, my opinion of her deteriorated as I came to understand how she treated her peers and subordinates. 3. Everyone starts each new job (especially their first job) with a sense of trepidation.  Will I fit in? Will people be nice to me?  The truth is, most people at most companies love having new employees who are hardworking, pleasant and have the ability to help make the company better. The initial warm reception that Never received at Greenwich Capital is not unusual. As with so many other issues, work and sports are identical this way. If you are a rookie and helping the team win and are supportive and considerate of your teammates you will be welcomed with open arms and held in high regard. Ben Carpenter, author of  The Bigs:  The Secrets Nobody Tells Students and Young Professionals About How to Choose a Career, Find a Great Job, Do a Great Job, Be a Leader, Start a Business, Manage Your Money, Stay Out of Trouble, and Live A Happy Life,  began his career as a commercial lending Officer at the Bankers Trust Company. Two years later he joined Bankers Trusts Primary Dealer selling U.S. Treasury bonds. After a brief stop at Morgan Stanley, Ben joined Greenwich Capital which, during his 22-year career there, became one of the most respected and profitable firms on Wall Street. At Greenwich Capital, Carpenter was a salesman, trader, sales manager, co-chief operating Officer, and co-CEO.

5 Ways to Refresh Your LinkedIn in the New Year

5 Ways to Refresh Your LinkedIn in the New Year 5 Ways to Refresh Your LinkedIn in the New Year Happy New Year to you! It’s 2018, we’re in the depths of the digital age and LinkedIn has become the essential personal branding tool to position you for your ideal role, and get you in front of the people important to your career goals. However, I’ve found all too often with clients, despite initially creating an all-star profile (basically, all the sections completed) they’ve let their LinkedIn profile fall by the wayside until that perfect role pops up, and manic makeover ensues! Auditing your profile and online presence Commit to auditing your profile and online presence every 3 monthsand you’ll save yourself the unnecessary stress. This process is made so much clearer and simpler when you first understand these 3 things: Your target role Your ideal audience Your unique selling point Keeping this in mind, here are the key things you need to refresh for the year ahead. 1. Your Profile Picture Firstly, if you don’t have one at all this is doing you some serious disservice! LinkedIn stats report that your reader is 21x more likely to click through to your profile if you include a professional clear photo. An easy way to up your visibility, right!? If you already have one, is it up to date? You might have gone with a new look in the past year, lost 20kg, grown out that facial fuzz. Keep it fresh and appropriate for your industry. 2. Your Headline You’ve heard the saying ‘dress for the job you want, not the job you have’, right? You need to take a similar approach with your headline. If I were a recruiter searching on LinkedIn to fill what you consider to be your ideal role, would I find you? Say you were a Project Manager whose responsibility had escalated in the last 12 months but for minimal return â€" i.e. at a company who didn’t value or reward your skill set with official progression, or where the culture just wasn’t aligned with you. Your default headline of ‘Project Manager’ won’t indicate that you are who I’m looking for. So get specific: Senior Project Manager on $15-$100M Civil Infrastructure Projects (Mid-tier). If that’s remotely what I’m looking for I’m going to click through to your profile to read on, which brings me to… 3. Your Summary Your summary is key to your positioning on LinkedIn. A summary utilizing the complete character availability (2000 characters) makes your profile more likely to show up in a search. Make it clear how you can help your ideal audience, and keep it future-focused and aspirational â€" demonstrating what results you can help them achieve, and supporting with key highlights and contributions. Revise your summary regularly to include any recent and relevant achievements, projects completed, awards or new skills/capabilities. Don’t be shy to add some personality. Nearly 40% of recruiters are looking for this. Show that you are ready for that next role and how, with your unique skills, specialties, training and track record of results, there's no better fit. 4. Your Experience I know you’ve accomplished new things in the last 12 months, taken on new responsibilities and made a valuable and tangible contribution to your team. Make sure you are adding this experience to your most recent role, including any further professional development and higher level skills you’ve demonstrated. Remember that recruiters want to see what you actually did. Your responsibilities don’t say anything about how good you were. What did you actually achieve and how? Example: Achieved 5% direct and 12% indirect savings through initiation and implantation of a Lean Six Sigma project. 5. Your Skills Almost every client I have worked with has been unaware that their skills section is prime SEO real estate. Your skills count as keywords. Even if you don’t have a certain word anywhere else in your profile, putting it as a skill will make your profile show up when someone searches for that word or phrase. This is such a simple and impactful update that you can make today. If you’re not sure where to start, check out some profiles of your competitors i.e. the people currently in the role you aspire to. What common skills and keywords are they using? Making small changes to your LinkedIn more regularly will ensure you are not only prepared for that next perfect opportunity, but are showing up on the radar of recruiters, and giving the best, most up-to-date insight into who you are and what you do.

Tips for Job-Seeking Millennials

Tips for Job-Seeking Millennials Tips for Job-Seeking Millennials Unemployment claims have remained consistently low, signaling a robust recovery in the job market. This trend is encouraging, particularly for millennials who bore the brunt of the recession- but with employment on the upswing, they now face competition for the best roles. As the unemployment rate drops and more people find jobs, there is still competition for the best positions. Even with a rosier employment outlook, applicants need to be prepared for job market competition, particularly for the high-paying positions with a positive outlook that everyone wants. Here are some tips for job-seeking millennials: 1. Network  â€" The most common source for new hires is employee referrals. Professional groups and industry meet-ups are ideal for networking, but don’t neglect other outlets for connectivity, like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and even Snapchat. Twitters hash-tagged chats, for example, are a simple way to “get your foot in the door” with like-minded professionals. 2. Go Outside the Norm  â€" A graphical resume can grab a prospective employers attention aesthetically and demonstrate your skills and experience.   A personal website functioning as a resume can also give those hiring an example of your abilities. 3. Know Your Worth  â€" Research what comparably-skilled employees make at your experience level and in your region. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, PayScale.com and job postings, such as those on CareerCast.com, can assist you in your search. 4. Stay Positive  â€" Attitude still goes a long way in the job search. You may be looking to leave one employer for another, but focus on the positives of your current and past employers when interviewing for new positions. Source:  CareerCast.com

How to be Safely Confrontational With Your Boss

How to be Safely Confrontational With Your Boss How to be Safely Confrontational With Your Boss Confronting your boss is never easy. Nobody likes hearing they are wrong and this particular person, controls whether or not you still have a job tomorrow. Most employees won’t even consider confronting their boss, but your boss is still a person. Everybody makes mistakes and is wrong sometimes. How can you fix your mistake or right a wrong if nobody tells you about it? Getting your message across the right way is the hard part. It is easy for someone to misunderstand you if you use say the wrong thing or use the wrong tone. You want to be able to dish out the difficult feedback but you don’t want your boss to feel attacked when you do. Here is how you can confront your boss safely. Schedule a meeting Your boss is a busy person. An easy way to upset the boss right at the beginning is by catching them off guard. Your boss is probably busy and you just interrupted his day and schedule. Scheduling a meeting with your boss gives you the opportunity to speak with them without worrying about them having something else to do. You get a chance to set a time limit to share your ideas. Use “I” statements Using statements with “you” can be seen as attacking and hostile. It can make your boss feel the need to get defensive and possibly angry. You want to use statements with “I”. They sound less accusatory and more conversational. For example: “You are overworking your employees.” It sounds cold and accusatory. Instead, try something that sounds less accusatory and gives your boss a sense of wanting to help: “I think that some of us feel that we are taking on more than we can handle.” Make sure you know the whole story Before you begin pinpointing problems, make sure you understand the entire story. Ask questions to help the boss see they are wrong without having to say it: “How do you perceive things are going?” “Are you happy with the situations?” “Are they sure about the decision or action that you’re questioning.” If afterward, you still have to point out the issue, try asking “Am I wrong about this?” Offering to be wrong helps reduce negative feedback, leaves room for discussion and can help you get even more information. Keep the conversation interesting while you are asking questions, you don’t want to bore your boss. Have possible solutions ready If you have to confront your boss about an issue make sure you have at least a couple of solutions ready before you do. Having solutions that are geared toward increasing productivity at work, shows that you didn’t just schedule the meeting to complain, you want to fix the problem. You should always have a solution, even if the issue is not your responsibility. You don’t just work for your boss, you work for a company. If you have long-term career plans with the company, it is your responsibility to help resolve the issue and move forward. The result Approaching the situation in an open and positive way is the best way to get good feedback. An awesome boss will thank you for your proactive and for your commitment. You and your boss will both grow from the experience. If you are confronted with negative feedback and face punishment, you may want to ask yourself if this is the place you want to be in your career right now. Ask yourself, “Is it time quit?” A boss who isn’t results-oriented and refuses to change, may not be worth your time and energy. Now, if you know of an issue and have been too afraid to confront your boss, shake off your fears. Follow these steps and go into your meeting with confidence, a positive attitude, and solutions. You got this. You may even find that you haveregained your motivation in the workplace. Even better, you might just leave your boss with a good impression of your future with the company.

Two Things That Make or Break a Resume

Two Things That Make or Break a Resume Two Things That Make or Break a Resume A good professional resume writer will tell you there are several mistakes that can turn an amazing career into an unremarkable resume. No matter how skilled you are at your position, your resume can make you look like a fool if it’s riddled with typos, poorly formatted or simply hard to read due to an unusual choice of typeface or font size. Following are two elements to consider when crafting a resume that genuinely illustrates who you are, what you do and the value you bring: Is your resume generic (translation: BORING)? The job postings you’re replying to spell out the exact candidate they want for the position. So why is your resume, the response to that ad, generic? If you can’t be bothered to take the time to personalize a resume and cover letter for each position, most employers won’t be bothered to read what you submit. Employers want you to draw their eye to the skills they seek. If you have the required skills, make sure you say so in an obvious way. Highlight those skills and give them a personalized feel Where is your resume’s focus? Many people were incorrectly taught that resumes should read like encyclopedias or worse, Christmas lists, but neither is the way to the heart of your future employer. Instead, you need to focus your resume on what you can bring to the company, what problems of theirs you can solve and how your very presence will make them grow. Knowing the company before you apply will help a great deal with this, so spend some time online getting to know the corporate culture and pet projects of your target employers. Take your research beyond the “history” and “about us” pages on the company’s web site, by using Google news and viewing the company’s employees’ LinkedIn profiles. Know this: the best career can be diminished by a mediocre resume. Don’t let this happen to you. Highlight the skills the particular employer needs, stay away from generics, and focus, focus, focus. Those are the keys to resumes that capture recruiters’ attention and win interviews!
